I definitely never expected to wind up in this little state, but for right now, I don’t think I would want to be anywhere else! Rhode Island has been so surprising and beautiful! Whenever I drive over the bridge into Newport, I have to remind myself not to stare out in awe cuzz like I’m going to crash my car…

Just a couple of photos of the reasons I love it here….

With these things I am loving so much, it returns me to the awareness of where my own lifestyle doesn’t always match my values. I want to soak in the community cafes and value the ocean, yet I am not composting, and I do create loads of trash. I go to Panera every morning and don’t bring a reusable cup. I over consume and under appreciate.
Unfortunately, I think that is all so so easy to do. In our Western society that values the individual over the community and consumerism over gratitude, I feel like it takes constant reminding myself to slow down and be grateful and giving. On that notee….with the holiday season approaching, here is how I plan to be more intentional and maybe it can inspire you as well!!!
- Saying NO and/or acceptance that you cannot do everything
- I’m a classic Eneagram 7 who is so easily inspired and excited by new hobbies, events, groups, etc. I constantly want to be everywhere all at once. As I have gotten older though, I realize being present in a few places is way more enjoyable and meaningful. I have lost friends and opportunities because of this, but my life has become fuller to for it.
- Nothing to do with the holidays, but I personally plan to invest my money into sustainable products more…I want to start composting at my next lease, get a new reusable mug (my current one leaks on me which is why I don’t use it), decrease trash, etc.
- Volunteering… always easier said than done with how busy things get, but make a hangout with friends out of going to a beach cleanup, play music at a nursing home, help with a community race/event, donate or volunteer at a local food banks, etc. etc.
- Holiday Gifts!
- Please godddd can we exchange the Starbucks or Amazon giftcards this year for things that support our community or foster community?! What if instead of a Starbucks giftcard, you took someone out for a coffee at a local cafe? What if instead of an Amazon giftcard, you supported a small business or charitable organization? Instead of acquiring more stuff, can you book a tour or cooking class together? The best gifts I have ever received are the ones that I knew my friend/family member considered who I am as a person and also supported something bigger than both of us! Look for small businesses, fair-trade products, prioritizing experiences and connection over consumerism:) I know I would wayy rather have a card with a thoughtful message or a homemade loaf of sourdough over another candle/mug/giftcard anyday. BUTT also thats me,if you know someone who REALLY loves/needs a candle, I say get them one but consider making it or getting from a small local org instead of Target?!
Ok thats my spiel for today and my coming out of hiding blog post. Lots of love to my 3 readers and to future Ashley who will read this again one day and need the reminder.
